Getting your location pin right

Why we use your phone’s GPS, where to stand, and what to do if accuracy is poor.

Why the pin comes from your phone

Addresses aren’t precise enough on their own: a postcode can cover a whole street, and a shopping centre can have one address for fifty shops. Your phone’s GPS, taken at your door, puts customers in exactly the right place — and gives us a reference point to check future confirmations against.

Where to stand

  • Best: just inside your entrance, or right outside it.
  • In a shopping centre or market: at your unit’s entrance, not the centre’s main door.
  • Upstairs or basement premises: at the street door customers use.

The accuracy reading

The app shows how accurate the current reading is, in metres. It needs to be 50 m or better before you can use it. Smaller is better.

If accuracy is poor…Try this
Deep inside a buildingMove to the entrance or a window and wait 20–30 seconds.
Stuck on a large numberTurn Wi-Fi on (it helps positioning even if not connected), then close and reopen the screen.
“Precise location is off”iPhone: Settings → Around Me → Location → Precise Location on. Android: Settings → Location → App permissions → Around Me → Use precise location.
“Mock location detected”Turn off any location-changing or VPN-location app. Listings can’t be added with a simulated location.

Got it wrong?

If you realise the pin was taken in the wrong place, go back to the premises and use We’ve moved in the app to capture it again. See moving, closing or handing over.

Download Around Me to find open businesses near you — or stand in your shop and add it in about two minutes. Silver listings are free.
